- W2040254967 abstract "Abstract The study has compared the removal of 2‐nitrophenol (ONP) and oxygen consumption patterns in batch respirometers with constant level of easily biodegradable biogenic substrate simulating municipal sewage. Two types of activated sludge biomass were used: sludge previously acclimated to the levels of ONP in the range of 10–300 mg 1‐1, and un‐acclimated sludge. The run with acclimated sludge, subjected to batch doses of 400 to 500 mg 1‐1 ONP, demonstrated immediate conversion of ONP at a rate of 4 to 5 mg g‐1 VSS.h, which was not affected by repeated addition of ONP after its complete disappearance, and in spite of accumulation of the degradation products. The run with un‐acclimated sludge, subjected to ONP levels of 5 to 300 mg 1‐1, has demonstrated a 170 to 230 hour lag before initiation of rapid and complete conversion of ONP. The oxygen uptake patterns for this run indicated suppression of utilization of the biogenic substrate until full conversion of ONP. Following the ONP removal the oxygen uptake rates increased, particularly in the respirometers with higher initial levels of ONP." @default.
