Improvement (ED), Addressing a component of critical thinking that is presently lacking in reading instruction in United States classrooms, this paper identifies and provides a review of the literature on six traits of analytical reading. Stemming directly from research in assessment and instructional practices, these traits identify the six critical reading skills necessary to develop readers who can process knowledge from print material and make meaning out of it to apply in other situations. The traits addressed in the paper are: (1) conventions; (2) comprehension; (3) context; (4) interpretation; (5) synthesis; and (6) evaluation. When used as an assessment framework, the six traits discussed in the paper function as criteria of exemplary reading skills that can be identified and evaluated within students' responses to texts. As an instructional method, the traits can be taught in a classroom situation to address critical thinking development alongside a literature-based curriculum. The paper concludes that, using the six traits, effective reading assessment and instruction can take place within clear criteria, grade-appropriate scoring guides for literacy and informational texts, and a continuum of performance skills within each of the six trait areas.
