- W2040396479 abstract "Current diagnostic guidelines support the use of magnetic resonance imaging in diagnostics of Alzheimer's disease. The volume of the hippocampus is a well established early measure of athropy. Manual hippocampus segmentation is difficult and time consuming, and automated tools are needed in clinical settings. The proposed approach is based on an extension and fast implementation of multi-atlas segmentation [1]. In multi-atlas segmentation, several atlases are registered non-rigidly to patient data and propagated segmentations are fused. Our extension includes: atlas selection, expectation maximization classification and partial-volume correction. The ADNI (www.loni.ucla.edu/ADNI) was used to evaluate the performance of the segmentation algorithm. First, the automatic segmentations were compared with semi-automatic segmentations for 340 cases provided by ADNI. The Dice similarity index (0=no overlap, 1=perfect overlap) between automatic and semi-automatic was 0.869±0.035 which compares well with the similarity between segmentations made manually by clinicians (average 0.88 from three studies). The similarity values over 0.7 are considered good. Only 3.1 % and 0.6 % of all segmentation produced similarity values below 0.8 and 0.7, respectively. The intra-class correlation coefficient for the hippocampus volumes generated automatically and semi-automatically was 0.94 while it has been 0.86 (average from four studies) for manual segmentations. Second, we studied the consistency of segmentations by comparing the volumes obtained from 3T and 1.5T images. We computed results for 181 cases having both 3T and 1.5T images acquired within a short period. The test-retest variability was 3.17±2.47 % when two outliers were excluded (the affine registration of the model and patient image failed due to severe artifacts in the 3T images). The intra-class correlations coefficient of the volumes was 0.98. The computation time of the algorithm in a standard laptop computer was less than two minutes." @default.
