The atmospheric oxidation of sulphur dioxide to sulphuric acid aerosol was studied during the winter of 1969/70 at seven sites in the Rouen region. By sulphuric acid we understand only the H2SO4 determined selectively by the microdiffusion method and not the stochiometric values computed from hydrogen ion or sulphate concentrations. The reaction is governed by the catalytic action of the suspended solid matter. Compared with this influence, the acceleration of the reaction by NH3 appears slight and the action of NO2 seems even less definite. No photochemical action is perceptible. The overall effect of fog is rather a diminution of the H2SO4 aerosol concentration. Under the observed conditions, and with the various assumptions which are made, the lower limit of estimation of the reaction rate is between 6 and 25 per cent h−1. As a mean value, during wintertime, in the Rouen region, 7.1 per cent of total airborne sulphur in the atmosphere is in the form of H2SO4." @default.
