- W2040425389 abstract "Among the many writing systems in the world today, Japanese is the most unique in the sense that 3 different types of scripts are used simultaneously to represent text. As pointed out by Steinberg and Yamada (1978-1979), most words in Japanese are written in kanji, a logographic script, while grammatical particles are usually written in hiragana and loan words in katakana. The latter 2 types of prints are called kana scripts, and each symbol represents a syllable of the spoken language. A fluent reader of Japanese has to know all 3 types of scripts. To cognitive psychologists as well as to reading specialists, the mixture in the Japanese writing systems provides an excellent condition for any sincere attempt to answer questions such as whether or not acquisition of reading skills is affected by orthographical differences. It is hoped that through such cross-writing-system and cross-language comparisons of reading skills and reading processes, one will be able to gain insight into the problem of visual information processing and will thus be able to design more efficient teaching methods for beginning readers. Recent experimental studies on the comparisons between reading alphabetic symbols (such as English) and reading logographic characters (such as Chinese characters which Japanese call kanji) with respect to the issues of speech recoding (Tzeng, Hung, and Wang, 1977), perceptual demands (Biederman and Tsao, in press), and cerebral lateralization (Hardyck, Tzeng, and Wang, 1977; Sasanuma, 1974; Tzeng, Hung, and Cotton, 1978) have yielded many promising leads to the future advancement of theories in visual information processing in general and reading processes in particular." @default.
