- W2040428589 abstract "Abstract Two trials, using 11 sheep in total, were conducted to investigate ruminal responses to long-term urea feeding in the diet. In Trial 1 isonitrogenous semipurified diets with soyabean meal or urea as a main nitrogen source were offered to eight sheep for 60 days in a single cross-over design. Nitrogen retention of urea-fed sheep was improved as a function of time of feeding, while that of the control was not. This was the result largely of decreased nitrogen output in the urine. Ureolytic activity of mixed bacteria tended to decrease gradually when urea was fed. Ruminal ammonia and volatile fatty acids determined one sampling day in every 10 days were not adequate parameters to explain the increase in nitrogen retention. In Trial 2 using three sheep, all of which were allotted the soyabean meal diet (for 10 days) followed by the urea diet (for 65 days), more frequent analyses in vitro and in vivo were performed to monitor postprandial changes in ruminal parameters and their variation with duration of urea feeding. With in vitro analysis bacterial ureolysis was rapidly depressed when urea feeding was started and the depression became more apparent in later stages of urea feeding. This decreased ureolysis was also observed in the in vivo experiment of Trial 2. Sheep fed urea initially had a lower density of bacteria in their rumen, but the density recovered to the same level as that of control sheep in later stages of urea feeding. These results suggest that bacteria play an important role in the long-term adaptation to urea in rumen function." @default.
