- W2040429908 abstract "A six-month-old, uncastrated, male, Quarterhorse weighing approximately 227 kg was seen as a field emergency for abdominal pain of two hour duration. The foal was not weaned and had not been dewormed or vaccinated. This was the foal's first episode of abdominal distress. The foal had signs of abdominal pain, evidenced by kicking at his abdomen, looking at the flank, laying down and roiling. A rectal exam was not performed due to the fractious nature and size of the patient. Physical examination revealed an enlarged firm painful umbilical sac. The owner reported that the umbilical swelling had been present since birth. Aportion of intestine could be palpated externally within the hernial sac and could not be reduced. The hernial sac was 5cm in length. The heart rate was 80 beats/minute, respiratory rate was 24 breaths/minute, temperature 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The mucous membranes were pink and the capillary refill time was 1 second. The differential diagnosis included intestinal incarceration within the umbilical sac. Due to the change in the umbilical sac and the severity of abdominal pain, the foal was referred to the hospital for exploratory surgery. The foal was mildly sedated with xylazine hydrochloride a (0.5mg/kg IV) for the 5 minute trailer ride to the hospital. Upon arrival at the hospital, the foal's hydration status was determined. The PCV was 31% and the total protein concentration was 7.6g/dl. An indwelling venous catheter was placed. Prior to induction of general anesthesia, Potassium Penicillin b (22,000IU/Kg of body weight, IV q 6 h), Gentocin c" @default.
