• W2040446776 abstract "A multivariate statistical analysis (MSA) method has been used to improve the quantification of energy dispersive X-ray concentration measurements of six alloying elements when a combination of equilibrium and non-equilibrium segregation was present at a grain boundary in an irradiated austenitic stainless steel. The robustness of the MSA method was tested using the following procedure. The concentration profiles of the six elements derived using MSA from the experimental line profile spectral series were input into a Monte Carlo beam-broadening programme. Concentration measurements were modelled for the same probe displacements and experimental parameters as employed in the original experiment. Artificial spectra were then generated, using a fundamental parameters programme, for each probe position, to simulate the original experimental spectra. Self-absorption and appropriate random noise were included. The resulting artificial spectral series was finally subjected to MSA, and the significant information components compared with those from the original experiment. Both artificial and experimental data sets contained only two significant eigenvectors containing almost identical correlations and anti-correlations of elements and similar spatial distributions. The results showed that the concentration profiles derived from experimental data using MSA were realistic and that MSA provided an alternative method for the interpretation of complex concentration profiles on a sub-nanometer scale by separate modelling of information components." @default.
