- W2040592017 abstract "Reviews Deaf Heritage, Jack R. Gannon, 483 pp., $26.95 hardback , $19.95 paperback, National Association of the Deaf, 814 Thayer Ave., Silver Spring, Md., 1981. Deaf Heritage, recently selected to be honored by the American Library Association as an outstanding literary contribution on or about disabled people, is the first comprehensive narrative history of the deaf and the culture of the deaf in the United States. The publication was made possible through efforts of Jack Gannon, National Association of the Deaf, and Gallaudet College. The edition is a compilation of events ranging from early attempts to educate the deaf to latest accomplishments of the deaf in the United States. The text is prepared in chronological order and categorical order as well, which makes the book an excellent reference. This book will be of great interest to all those in the educational field of deafness such as teacher training programs, schools for the deaf, and seminars. It can also be used as a textbook in deaf studies at different levels; college, high school, and elementary. The entire text is so rich in heritage and culture of the deaf that I have taken a personal pride in the book and recommend that every library has a copy. Gertrude S. Galloway Maryland School for the Deaf Living with Deaf-Blindness, Carol Yoken, 175 pp., $9.50 (doth), $6.50 (paper), National Academy of Gallaudet College, Washington, D.C. 20002,1979. This is a tremendously moving book giving deep insight into the human significance of deaf-blindness. Ms. Yoken is a gifted writer who brings the lives of the nine deaf-blind people vividly to the printed page. At no time are the presentations maudlin or other than psychologically honest. The biographical portraits of these nine people give the reader great empathy with what it means in one's life to lose hearing and sight. This should be required reading for professionals and lay people in deafblindness , and it is an excellent book for anyone interested in the human condition. McCay Vernon, Ph.D. Editor American Annals of the Deaf Signed English for the Residence Hall, Gallaudet College Press, Washington, D.C, 1979. The standardization of signs used in this book should prove valuable to dorm staff members . Plurals, adverbs, and different tenses, as well as a variety of sentences, are included. These should be of more value than fragmented words to new staff members who may be unfamiliar with signs. Jackie E. Johnson Director of Student Life The Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind St. Augustine, FIa. 32084 Island of Silence, Carolyn Brimley Norris, $1.25 (paper), Popular Library, address not given. Can a young and beautiful teacher of the deaf from a little town in Ohio save the handsome, young, deafened veteran from bitterness? Can she do it alone, on the mysterious, haunted island, or must she enlist the help of her precious , deaf, beautiful, teenage sister? To find out, you must read Island of Silence byC. Norris. The author sets her story on an isolated island off the Florida Coast; the setting makes the isolation of deafness more vivid. Presented within the framework of a mystery story—complete with moss-covered trees, an old southern mansion , and of course, a ghost—the novel shows a truly realistic insight into the emotions of the deaf and those who love them. Each chapter contains vital information for all who are interested in the effects of deafness. To all parents and educators who would will the mental isolation of oralism on the deaf, I recommend Island of Silence. Jacqueline Shields Parent Maryland School for the Deaf Frederick, Md. 21701 Amer-Ind Gestural Code Based on American Indian Hand Talk, Madge Skelly, Ph.D., 494 pp., $18.95 (cloth $34.95), Elsevier-North Holland, 52 Vanderbilt Ave., New York, N.Y. 10017, 1979.
