- W2040672925 abstract "Food allergy impacts 8% (5.9 million) of children in the United States (US). Forty percent of food-allergic children have experienced at least one severe reaction. Caregivers (N=1,643) of a child with a current food allergy were surveyed from November 2011 to February 2012 and asked to assess medical, out-of-pocket, lost productivity, and opportunity costs in addition to his or her willingness-to-pay (WTP) for an effective food allergy treatment. The economic cost of food allergy was estimated at $24 billion annually ($4,077 year/child). Direct medical costs were $3.7 billion, which included clinician visits, emergency department visits, and hospitalizations. Out-of-pocket costs to caregivers were $5.5 billion, 31% stemming from the cost of special foods and diets. Lost opportunity costs totaled $14 billion, which related to leaving or changing jobs to care for the child with food allergy. Caregiver’s WTP was $21 billion. Significant unmeasured costs of childhood food allergy were evident including: strained relationships, activity limitations, and social life restrictions. Food allergy places a significant financial burden on families and society. Results from this study reveal significant direct medical costs to the health care system. Caregivers’ WTP for a food allergy treatment is equivalent to costs associated with out-of-pocket expenses, lost productivity, and lost opportunity. Resources are needed to develop treatments for food allergy. A comprehensive understanding of the economic burden of childhood food allergy has the potential to guide the formulation of public health policies and clinical guidelines." @default.
