Our method plans to irradiate the isolated organ at a thermal neutron field soon after having beenexplanted and boron enriched and before being grafted into the same donor (liver autograft with boron neutron capturetherapy). In particular the crucial point of boron uptake was investigated by a rat model with a relevant number of procedure(65). We give for the first time statistically significant results on the selective boron absorption by tumour tissues. The data reported in section 6 evidence an important progress on the way of the clinical application of the procedure. Keywords: Neutron capture therapy, liver metastases, boron uptake, autograft1. INTRODUCTIONThe unsolved problem of an effective treatment of the multifocal unresectable liver tumour is the target of our researchprogram (TAORMINA). Hepatocellular carcinoma is perhaps the prevalent neoplasia in the world; the liver is the mostcommon site of metastases from colorectal cancer. The Boron Neutron Capture Therapy, employed as the intermediate phase of the liver autograft procedure, presents noticeableaspects useful to face such a problem:a) Decisive advantage to preserve the remaining organs from radiation damage. The treatment of the liver outside the patientwill distinguish our procedure from any previous BNCT clinical experience.b) The therapy could be possible and effective also in the case of tumour metastases disseminated to both lobes of the liver. Asusual, the therapy is based on the ionising effect of 4He,7Li ions released in the final state of the nuclear reaction" @default.
