- W2040694296 abstract "The auditorium of the Station Street Theatre in Vancouver. as arranged for Rumble Productions' collaborative piece, Strains, accommodated a lit, square performance space which the actors entered and left: auditorium, acting space, and actors' bodies together forming the mise-en-scene. As Arnold Aronson points out, the mise-en-scene of much contemporary theatre can become the dominant element of a production, establishing the whole tone and shaping the interpretation ... as well as determining the rhythm and movement of the performers. This appears to be particularly true in postmodern productions where the scene may be formed not only as it has been traditionally — by stage set, costume, lights, movement, and histrionic style — but also by historical appropriation and fragmentation. More important, the mise-en-scene in such productions, as Sarah Bryant-Bertail notes, is fundamentally signified through culturally constructed human bodies. These bodies are materially anchored in the actors on stage but touch every other element of the production. This is entirely the case with Strains." @default.
