- W2040772671 abstract "Many workers have endeavored to elucidate the boundary separating compositions in the Co-Cr-Al ternary system which lead to formation of protective Cr2O3 or Al2O3 scales in an oxidizing environment at 1000 C from those which do not. In this work, these results have been brought together, and supplemented by the authors' own work, in the form of ternary maps, one divided according to scale morphology and the other according to oxidation rate. These maps are in reasonable agreement as to the location of the protective/non-protective boundary. It appears that approximately 25 At% aluminum or chromium and aluminum must be added to cobalt to form Al2O3, although the aluminum content may not fall below 9 At%, or that approximately 32 At% chromium or a minimum of 20 At% chromium with 7 At% aluminum must be added to form Cr2O3 Some thermal cycling tests have also been conducted on the chromia formers, Co-30Cr and Co-2Al-25Cr (both Wt%), and on the alumina formers, Co-13Al and Co-5Cr-10Al (both Wt%). In all cases, the protective scale formed in the first cycle spalled on cooling. Whereas the ternary alloys showed a marked tendency to re-form the protective scale at the onset of the second period of oxidation, the binary alloys formed CoO which was quickly healed. The re-formed protective scale on the ternary alloys tended to spall at temperature or on further cooling, which led to the formation of CoO which was also quickly healed. Attention is also drawn to the possibility of a composition-temperature dependence for the formation of either Cr2O3 or Al2O3 between 800 and 1000 C. The evidence for the former suggests that less chromium may be required at the lower temperature, the variation being of the order of 5 Wt%, whereas there is only limited evidence for such a dependence in the case of the latter." @default.
