- W2040787647 abstract "This article argues that the twentieth-century Catholic theologian, Hans Urs von Balthasar, appropriates major Jewish criticisms of Christian theology for intramural use while also providing an ample response to these criticisms within his own constructive work. More specifically, the criticisms that von Balthasar levels against various Christian theologians structurally parallel those levelled against Christianity by Jewish thinkers such as Emmanuel Levinas, Martin Buber and, most recently, Michael Wyschogrod. In part 1, I will articulate the basic lines of this Jewish critique appropriated by von Balthasar. Part 2 seeks to show that von Balthasar's diagnostic use of drama and epic structurally parallels the Jewish concern for attention to worldly affairs on the one hand and Jewish criticisms of Christian theology on the other. Part 3 is both diagnostic and prescriptive. It demonstrates von Balthasar's deployment of the Jewish critique against C.W.F. Hegel, Karl Barth and Karl Rahner and articulates a von Balthasarian response to Jewish criticisms on both formal and material grounds." @default.
