- W2040806509 abstract "The geochemical evolution of weathering granite is described in terms of the development of residua that become increasingly enriched in the components SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3 and H2O. Mineralogical evolution mirrors this trend in that the residua tend to become dominated by phases such as kaolinite, quartz, gibbsite or goethite/hematite. The principle controlling factor is the behaviour of groundwaters most of which, in granitic terrains, appear to be buffered to compositions in equilibrium with kaolinite. Most physical (“soil-forming”) factors of the environment affect the availability, residence-time and composition of groundwaters and thereby determine the geochemical and mineralogical evolution of the weathering granite." @default.
