- W2040946579 abstract "Parent education programs that consist of a film presentation and a discussion period-often referred to in trade as stands-reach more persons than all other mental health programs combined. But there have been few systematic investigations of their impact, despite estimates that one-night stands and similar types of education programs may involve some ten million parents a year.' One author of many highly regarded pamphlets used in mental health and parent education activities once asked, What criteria do we have as to effectiveness of education techniques? and replied to her own question, sad answer is none to speak of.2 This declaration, made in 1948, is accurate even now. The 1950's did see a rush of self-studies by mental health educators, most of which were incompetent by any standards. Brim, for example, in evaluating parent education studies from 1930 to 1959, found only seven which approximate accepted standards of research.3 The study reported here was directed at remedying conspicuous absence of research efforts on the onenight stand. We were concerned, first of all, with whether a one-shot mental health education experience changes level of knowledge and attitudes of persons who are exposed to it. Second, we wished to study whether any changes produced by these mental health programs persist over time. Finally, we were interested in whether impact of mental health programs is differentially associated with certain soci l and psychological characteristics of persons exposed to them." @default.
