These pairs provide the mechanism for fast 1H nuclear-spin-lattice relaxation rates in these systems. Following a suggestion that similar pairing might occur at very high temperatures in the bulk metal hydrides, and thus explain the anomalously fast relaxation rates observed there, the mechanism has been given further consideration. A simple model is developed assuming relaxation occurs in some excited state in the bulk hydrides. If this state were a pairing state, H-H spacing would need to be less than that in the normal H2 molecule under all but the most favorable assumptions. Based on this model, pairing is an unlikely relaxation mechanism in bulk metal hydrides at high temperatures, but it cannot be excluded." @default.
