- W2041016857 abstract "Abstract New Zealand has been directly and continuously involved in the geological exploration of the Ross Dependency since early in 1957 when Scott Base was established for the Trans-Antarctic Expedition. Later, United States logistic activities between New Zealand and McMurdo Sound, arising out of the IGY and its continuation, offered opportunities to exploit the Antarctic summer for geological field work, thus avoiding personnel having to “winter over”. As a result, the New Zealand Geological Survey, D.S.I.R., Expedition of 1957–58 to the Tucker Glacier marked the beginning of Government-supported geological and topographical exploration in Ross Dependency. Since then at least two field parties have been sponsored and supported each summer, and at times there have been up to four New Zealand geological parties in the field. The Government expeditions have usually been led by a senior Geological Survey geologist supported by senior and graduate students from the various Universities, especially Wellington and Auckland, with topographic surveyors and their assistants to complete field parties. Besides the wholly Government-sponsored expeditions there has been constant and active interest in Victoria Land by the Victoria University of Wellington through its Geology Department—an activity that has resulted in important contributions to the detailed geology of the area. One of the side results of the University work in the Ross Dependency has been that Honours and graduate students have received a fine start in independent geological work in an area where the youthful desire for adventure can be satisfied. This has in turn built up a large body of young and informed Antarctic geologists. This group, together with those senior Survey geologists who have worked in the Antarctic, now form an active, interested, and knowledgable body of Antarctic geologists in New Zealand. Two other field parties have contributed to the geological knowledge of the area: one sponsored by the New Zealand Alpine Club and the other by the Federated Mountain Clubs of New Zealand. The development of New Zealand expeditions operating in the field throughout the summer has been made possible by the generous cooperation of the United States in arranging air and sea transport to McMurdo Sound and air transport in the field." @default.
