- W2041294128 abstract "Then freshlich the freke the fente up-reres, Broches him in with the brand to the bright hiltes, And he brawles on the brand and bounes for to die. (4249-51) 1 In one of the most memorable scenes of the Alliterative Morte the traitor and the king square off in a duel that will leave Mordred slain and Arthur mortally wounded. Thus far the standard reading of the climax of this scene is that Arthur lifts up a part of Mordred's armor called the fente and delivers the deathblow by stabbing him in the face or upper chest; as I will argue, however, the fente is the cover protecting Mordred's backside, so Arthur kills the traitor by driving the sword into his anus. This brutal blow is a symbolic act of retribution for the threat Mordred has posed to manhood. While I will focus my remarks on this alternative reading of Mordred's death, prior critics have examined the episode that leads up to the killing of the usurper: the mortal wound that Mordred gives to Arthur. Jeff Westover, in a provocative article entitled Arthur's End: The King's Emasculation in the Alliterative Morte Arthure, asserts that when Mordred wounds Arthur in the felettes (commonly glossed as 'loins'), he is actually striking him in the genitals. 2 He argues that Mordred symbolically cas- trates Arthur, for this mortal wound to the felettes will lead to the end of lineage and kingdom. 3 Anne Clark Bartlett argues a similar point, suggesting that Mordred's cuckolding of Arthur leaves the king effectively emasculated. 4 While Arthur is childless and apparently impo- tent, Mordred is highly potent; in the relatively short time that Arthur has been campaigning in Europe, Mordred has already managed to have more than one child with Gaynor. The dying Arthur later orders the death of these children—thereby rendering Mordred's line as sterile as" @default.
