Gonzalez-Andino1, 2 1 Geneva University Hospital, Switzerland 2 University Medical Center , Switzerland 3 Ecole Polytechniqe Federal de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland Although rarely studied, disappointment is one of the prime negative emotions that influence decision making. Indeed, in order to avoid feeling negative emotions, individuals tend to modify their behavior in an often unpredictable and irrational way. Up to now, the neural correlates of this phenomenon have never been investigated in neuroimaging studies. Here we show that after a certain threshold of disappointment, behavior becomes irrational. Specifically, all participants in a socio-economic game (the Trust Game) started punishing new, unknown opponents as a result of disappointing outcomes in the previous trial. However, a large variance in the tolerance to disappointment was observed across subjects, with some participants needing only a small gap between their expectations and the real outcome to be strongly biased in their following judgments. As revealed by high density EEG recordings and contrary to the currently held view, this behaviour was not the direct consequence of emotions. Indeed, those least tolerant individuals used the same neural system to process both neutral and emotionally-laden outcomes, whereas the most tolerant ones - who thought twice before making a decision and earned more money - relied on a conflict-resolution system when confronted to unexpected outcomes. This study thus provides stark evidence for the co-existence of two different neural systems within certain individuals, one reflexive and one reflective, as predicted by the dual-system theory of social judgment and decision making.
