- W2042056576 abstract "PURPOSE: Are assessments of the athlete by graded exercise test protocol applicable by the same way for patients with diabetes mellitus (IDDM) as for healthy athletes? The comparison of oxygen consumption for different tests (graded exercise test, submax. load and max. interval testing) do not lead to the criterion of any difference. On the other hand heart rate (HR) increases faster when rising work load for subjects with diabetes. This study examines particularly kinetics of HR, ventilatory data and metabolism while different kind of exercise and depending recovery period in the two groups. The study wants to offer tools to the athletes accessments METHODS: This examination compares healthy athletes (HA; n=1 2; 36 y) with IDDM-patients (DM; n=13; 35 y) in three different methods of testing. Both groups were well trained (HA 6,8 hours/week; DM 7,3 h/w). Under standardized testing conditions a maximum graded exercise test [T1] was carried out at first. Two further tests (submaximal test of 50% over 30 minutes VO2max [T2] and three step max. interval test [T3]) were submitted following within 24 hours interval, respectively. Heart rate and respiratory data were collected continuously and laktate/glucose fine-meshed collected atT1/T2/T3. RESULTS: No difference appeared for oxygen consumption at T1-T3 in both groups. However HR differed relating to increased load at T1. During recovery there was no difference of HR between the groups atT1 and T2. After maximum intervals (while active break of 35% VO2max) and during recovery (RE) of T3 HR showed a considerable removal in HA versus DM (break1: 109: 124*/break 2: 113: 130*/RE 3' 100: 116 **/RE5' 81: 95 **). Lactate reacted similairly at T1 in maximum and at recovery values for HA and DM. At T2 lactate values of DM exceeded of HA significantly (p<0,05) during the complete load but reached similar values in RE10'for both groups. At T3 lactate differed for DM vs HA significantly (p<0,05). During recovery the previous detected difference consisted (p<0,05). CONCLUSOON: At interval load a various recovery capacity was found during the breaks and recovery time for healthy athletes as well as in athletes with diabetes. On the other hand there was no recognizable difference in the two groups for maximum VO2-test and heart rate reaction for exercise and recovery. An assessment of athletes with diabetes requires special features, especially when interval sports activity is performed. Prolonged recovery time is due to risen anaerobic accumulation. There is a higher demand of sufficient recovery time in athletes with diabetes. According to our findings aerobic training should be adapted by using lower thresholds." @default.
