However most of the absorbed Zn was retained in the roots, which caused Zn deficiency in plants growing under a marginal Zn supply (0.05 µM in this case). With higher levels of Zn supply, plant growth was normal. P levels in the range of 30 µM-150 µM have none or slightly increasing effect on the Zn absorption rates, and suppress it at highest level (300 µMP) used. The content of Zn in plants followed a similar trend as to the pattern of uptake from the solution. Plant growth was below optimum in plants receiving marginal Zn supply (0.05 µM). Bicarbonate levels of both 20 mM and 40 mM severely inhibited the Zn absorption by roots, being virtually stopped after few hours of uptake period in case of 40 mM HCO3-. HCO3- was found to stop the uptake of K, and inhibit severely that of N, P, Mg and Fe, probably causing some physiological damage to the roots." @default.
