- W2042569969 abstract "Baseline characteristics, including body composition measures by bioelectrical impedance, medication profiles, and reported symptoms were recorded in an observational database for 1624 HIV+ men and 315 HIV+ women. Mean values for body cell mass (BCM) were slightly higher in both men and women taking anabolic medications including injection testosterone, oral anabolic steroids, subcutaneous injected growth hormone, and combinations of the above. 214/434 patients on nelfinavir and 96/231 patients on ritonavir reported diarrhea. Nelfinavir and ritonavir were the only antiretroviral medications significantly associated with symptoms (diarrhea) reported by 34% of all patients group of patients. 23% of all patients reported nausea, which was not significantly associated with a particular medication or body composition parameter. Serial measures were taken on 11 women and 125 men. After baseline evaluation, recommendations, and intervention weight improved to at or above 100% of usual body weight in 25 patients and BCM was improved to at or above 100% of desired level for 12 patients. Weight and BCM improved for patients in both the anabolic-treatment and non-treatment groups, though the anabolic medications showed a significant improvement in BCM from a baseline mean of 66.7 pounds to follow-up of 72.5 pounds (p < 0.05) vs. baseline of 66.2 pounds to follow-up of 68.0 pounds in non-treated patients. Conclusions: Patients on anabolic therapies had higher BCM and lower fat levels regardless of total body weight. Improvements were seen in serial measures of weight, body composition, and symptom control in most patients. No clear relationships were seen between antiretroviral medications and body composition compartment volumes. Body compartment volumes were significantly related to the use of testosterone replacement and anti-wasting therapies." @default.
