- W2042895496 abstract "Abstract Osmoregulatory capacity (difference between the haemolymph osmolality and external osmolality) increased (improvements of between 33 and 206 mOsm.kg−1) with development in newly hatched beachfleas Orchestia gammarellus (Pallas). The ability to hyper-osmoregulate when maintained on dilute media (10–75% sea water) and hypo-osmoregulate on concentrated media (100 and 125% sea water) increased with age (post-hatch) for individuals cultured in vitro. Hatchlings remained within the marsupium, where the osmotic environment is under maternal control, for a period of 10.6±1.4 days or 11.8±1.4 days (on 50% and 75% sea water media respectively) during which time they developed the `adult pattern' of osmoregulation. The hyper-osmoregulatory ability of hatchlings released naturally from the female marsupium was identical to that of adults. Our data support the hypothesis that hatchlings attain a level of `physiological competency' in osmoregulation before leaving the marsupium." @default.
