- W2042953472 abstract "Bovine Somatotropin (bST) is a nonsteroidal hormone, produced in the pituitary glands of cows, which regulates growth and affects the production of milk. Administering bST to dairy cattle can increase milk yields, and since bST can now be produced through biotechnology methods it is a potential commercial technology for agriculture. Scientists expect more milk output from fewer cows, thereby increasing profits for farmers and decreasing costs for consumers. However, bST has not been approved for commercial use by the United States' Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and has been banned from use in several countries. In the political arena, animal welfare advocates, family farm advocates, science-for-the-people advocates, and consumer activist groups have come forth with political, economic, and ethical objections to bST. This paper examines the ethical dimensions of individual and group decisions about bST, as a case study in the ethics of technical changes more generally. It is argued that the most significant aspect of this case is the underlying philosophy or ethos of technology that influences choices about bST at each level of decision making, from farmer to research administrator. It is a challenge to this philosophy that underlies the ethical criticisms of bST, and other new technology as well." @default.
