- W2043156780 abstract "In semi-arid tropical Australia, basaltic lava flows with ages of 0.01, 0.89, 2.46, 2.64, 3.4 and 5.59 Ma show a trend of progressive soil thickness increase of ca. 0.30 m/Ma. This rate is 10 to 1000 times slower than most soils on unconsolidated parent materials such as alluvium, dune sand and glacial deposits. Reverse polarity magnetisation of pedogenic hematite in the lower B horizons of soils on the four oldest flows, indicates acquisition of the remanence prior to the Brunhes/Matuyama polarity transition at 0.78 Ma. Preservation of such a reverse polarity implies that the remanence carrier (pedogenic hematite) has been unchanged by chemical weathering or physical disturbance by soil biota for at least 0.78 Ma. A conceptual model of soil development is presented which implies that prior to 0.78 Ma soil weathering may have occurred to a greater depth because summer rainfall was significantly higher than present. The extremely slow rate of soil formation implied from these basaltic soils in northern Australia is a clear warning that agricultural use of such soils is unlikely to be sustainable against accelerated surface erosion." @default.
