- W2043281114 abstract "Research on organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) has primarily focused on the belief that these extra-role activities are performed by selfless employees that do so despite likely being neither recognized nor rewarded. We argue lower level employees may be motivated to perform OCBs as mechanism to increase organizational power. As such, although employees may not be directly compensated for their extra-role behaviors, they may still have underlying motives that are not nearly as selfless as generally assumed. In this light, we answer the call by scholars to create a more balanced view of OCBs by creating a proposed model that adds to the growing research stream examining the dark side of OCBs. To do so, we use the resource dependence theory as a framework to provide a model which demonstrates the ways in which the five dimensions of OCBs can lead to organizational power. We also incorporate three key moderators – desire to acquire power, task criticality, and transaction alternatives while adopting the organizational-level variable of slack resources for the individual-level model. Implications and directions for future research are also discussed." @default.
