- W2043283419 abstract "P-064 Introduction: Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are ubiquitous in the air we breathe and can cause a variety of adverse health effects. Benzene and 1,3-butadiene are of particular concern because of their carcinogenic potential. However, validated methods for the determination of 1,3-butadiene levels are scarce because of its low stability on traditional adsorbents. To measure the exposure of the general population, there is a need to develop diffusive samplers, for long periods (weeks) as well as for shorter periods (8–24 h). Herein we present the validity of previously determined uptake rates for 1,3-butadiene and benzene for two diffusive samplers exposed in the field compared to active sampling method. Method: Samplers tested were a new diffusive sampler SKC-Ultra and Radiello, both of which are compatible with thermal desorption, and two adsorbents, Carbopack X and Carbograph 5. We tested the samplers for use under various environmental conditions with respect to relative humidity, temperature, air movement, and possibly interfering chemicals. Both outdoor (summer, autumn and winter) and indoor field studies were performed. Samplers were exposed for one week and for periods of 24 h. Active sampling (NPL-pump) provided independent controls for each sampling day. Analyses were performed using an automatic thermal desorber (ATD) connected to a gas chromatograph with flame ionization detector (GC/FID). For evaluation multiple linear regression analysis were used. Results: The concentrations of the examined compounds in the air varied during the various sampling places, ranging from 0.03 to 0.65 μg/m3 (1,3-butadiene) and 0.8 to 4.7 μg/m3 (benzene), comparable with those reported at other sites in Sweden. There were strong linear associations with the reference method for both compounds and diffusive samplers with Carbopack X. The slope differed, however, slightly from one in some cases. There was a larger scatter in the data for both samplers for 1,3-butadiene with Carbograph 5. Discussion and Conclusions: A comparison between adsorbents showed that Carbopack X is a better adsorbent than Carbograph 5 for 1,3-butadiene but they are more comparable for benzene. The good agreement found for both samplers filled with Carbopack X using the established uptake rates, compared to the reference method was especially satisfactory considering the varying environmental conditions as regard concentration range, humidity (15–100%), temperature (-20°C to +30°C), wind speed (<0.1 – 4 m/s) and interfering compounds. The samplers may be used for both stationary and personal monitors indoors and outdoors of 1,3-butadiene and benzene for the general population and for working atmospheres." @default.
