• W2043288070 abstract "A solution of the Laplace equation of capillarity for the shape of drops on an inclined planar solid surface is presented. The point of departure is the development of a new model of the boundary conditions: We assume in the solution that the drop is slowly sliding down the inclined plane and that the shape of the drop interface is governed by the Laplace equation. The boundary conditions along the line of contact are described in the form of a functional relationship between the contact angle and the velocity of the three phase line. Such a relation can be obtained from phenomenological experiments on the dynamic contact angle. The numerical procedure in the formulation of the problem is a finite element method. A system of nonlinear finite element equations is obtained by minimizing the free energy potential of the drop. The surface of the drop is approximated by a set of rectangular elements (rectangular elements in a spherical coordinate system). The basis functions of this finite element approximation are a set of bi-quadratic spline functions. The calculated drop shapes are compared, qualitatively, with experimental drops that are sliding on inclined siliconized glass surfaces. That comparison shows a close qualitative agreement between calculated and observed drop profiles." @default.
