- W2043590579 abstract "This study explored behavioural gustatory responses of the adult cockroach, Periplaneta americana to d and l-amino acids. Insects were mounted and tested using a modified Frings method. Results indicate: (1) Cockroaches responded positively to l-amino acids but not to most d-amino acids. (2) Sodium-buffered solutions generally enhanced gustatory responses to l-amino acids, particularly to valine, leucine, isoleucine, methionine, phenylalanine and tryptophan, with concomitant decreases in thresholds. Observed enhanced responses were shown to be due to some type of sodium-ion involvement. The d-enantiomers were not tested in buffer. (3) On the other hand, responses to l-proline and hydroxy-l-proline were not affected by the buffer. (4) No overall amino acid structure-activity relationship could be determined." @default.
