- W2043770151 abstract "There are few instances when immunization is considered, or is indeed necessary during pregnancy. These situations include epidemics or when travel to endemic areas cannot be avoided. The risk of the disease must outweigh the potential risks of immunization. Vaccinations may, however, be given inadvertently in the first trimester before pregnancy is recognized. There is little information as to the exact risks of various vaccines and their risk to the fetus, so that the information given here can only be by way of a guide. Each individual case must be examined carefully to assess the potential benefit that may be conveyed by vaccination. The guidelines for immunization in pregnancy are outlined in Table 1. No vaccine, toxoid or immune globulin can be regarded as entirely safe in pregnancy, particularly in the first trimester. In some cases infection may lead to fetal abnormality and giving live vaccine potentially risks fetal infection, for this reason most live vaccines should be considered contraindicated in pregnancy. However, any acute illness brings with it the risk of premature labour and the consequent mortality and morbidity to the infant. Vaccines should only be administered in pregnancy if there is a clearly defined risk of infection." @default.
