- W2043799680 abstract "Two cases of acute strongyloidiasis occurring in an Italian couple recently returned from a vacation in Thailand are published in this issue. 1 The infection was most likely acquired in Koh Samui Island because this was the only place where they walked barefoot on herbal soil surrounding their bungalow. These cases highlight the growing importance of strongyloidiasis in travelers, especially in light of the potentially serious consequences of the infection.Strongyloidiasis, a soil‐transmitted helminth infection that is endemic in tropical and subtropical countries, has recently been considered as an “emerging global infectious disease.” 2 Travelers are at risk when they walk barefoot or in sandals in endemic areas, although the risk from beach activities is unknown.
