- W2043900095 abstract "Background: Older adults remain the least studied demographic group with respect to crime victimization; the health consequences of crime are unknown in this population.Purpose: To estimate the prevalence and types of police-older adult interaction in a well-characterized observational cohort of community-dwelling older adults.Design: Pilot observational cohort study.Population: A random sample (n = 200) of the New Haven EPESE cohort, 2,812 community dwelling older adults who were 65 or older in inception year 1982.Methods: Manual matching of police records from the same jurisdiction as the cohort for the follow-up period 1985–1991 was attempted. The prevalence of police-older adult interactions was estimated. Rates of police contact were compared for demographic subgroups. Using the match rate derived from the pilot sample, the power of the study to detect the contribution of victimization on mortality was estimated.Major Results: Forty-seven of 200 (23.5%) subjects had 86 police contacts over the follow-up period. Older adults were the victim in 37 (43.0%) of contacts, reporters of a crime in 26 (30.2%), offenders in 9 (10.5%), witnesses in 8 (9.3%). In total, 23 (11.5%) of the 200 had at least one police contact in which they were the victim; victims were more likely to be male and non-white. This methodology can detect a relative risk of mortality after crime of 1.4 with 90% power at an alpha level of 0.05 when all cohort members are matched to police records. There is similar power to detect the impact of crime on other health outcomes that are routinely measured in the cohort (e.g., functional decline, depression). Conclusions: Older adults have substantial interactions with community police departments for a variety of reasons including victimization. The strategy of linking an established health and aging cohort with police records potentially permits an analysis of health outcomes of crime quickly and at a fraction of the cost of establishing a de novo cohort for this purpose." @default.
