- W2043906384 abstract "Abstract The complex dielectric constant of DNA-protamine systems reconstituted from the herring sperm components was measured at various temperatures (5–40 °C) in the frequency range from 1 MHz to 1 GHz. The frequency patterns of both the permittivity and the dielectric loss reveal the existence of the typical relaxation known as β-dispersion. The experimental data were fitted with the Cole-Cole equation and the relaxation times estimated. The activation enthalpy of the dielectric process was calculated by an analysis in terms of the Arrhenius law. The results for both free and complexed protamine show a concentration dependence of the relaxation time, while the activation enthalpy is invariant. The conclusion is drawn that the relaxation process at these frequencies is abolished upon interaction of the protamine with DNA. By considering the conformational transition of the protein in the formation of the complexes, a value of 12–16 kcal/mol is attributed to the interaction energy between protamine and DNA." @default.
