- W2043925535 abstract "To examine the effect of global-processing training (framework-to-detail encoding strategy) in right-brain-damaged stroke survivors. Randomized controlled study. Acute inpatient rehabilitation hospitals. Twelve consecutive right-brain-damaged stroke survivors with visuospatial deficits (immediate recall accuracy of Modified Taylor Complex Figure < 14/36) but without spatial neglect (Behavioral Inattention Test score > 129/146). Participants were randomly assigned to the Global Processing group (the treatment condition) or the Rote Repetition group (the control condition) for the 90-minute training session in which they were to learn the Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure (ROCF). ROCF accuracy and organization scores before, during and after training were obtained with a total of eight drawings—copy, immediate recall (IR), five immediate post-training recalls (IPTRs), and delayed recall (DR)—produced by each participant. The Global Processing group showed a greater improvement in ROCF recall from 10.83 ± 4.27 (IR) to 22.58 ± 4.65 (last IPTR), in comparison to the Rote Repetition group whose scores improved from 10.63 ± 3.43 to 15.79 ± 8.55 (p<0.001). Thirty minutes later, the Global Processing group was able to retain recall accuracy with the mean score of 20.63 ± 4.61, and the Rote Repetition group's delayed recall scored 13.63 ± 7.56. More importantly, better spatial organization was associated with improved performance accuracy in the Global Processing group, r = 0.82 (p=0.044); no such association was found in the Rote Repetition group. Right-brain-damaged stroke survivors with visuospatial deficits benefit significantly from a framework-to-detail encoding strategy, significantly improving visuospatial learning and memory. Further research is required to investigate rehabilitative application of the global-processing training." @default.
