- W2043973358 abstract "Although the Podocarpaceae are generally regarded as a Southern Hemisphere family, convincing evidence has accumulated in recent years to show that they occurred widely in the Northern Hemisphere during the Mesozoic. The best-known example is the seed-bearing cone Scarburgia hillii described by Professor T.M. Harris from the Middle Jurassic of Yorkshire. Similar seed-bearing cones which occur in the Middle Jurassic of the Kraków region, Poland, include an immature specimen with the cone scales arranged in whorls of three. They are described here as Harrisiocarpus gucikii gen. et sp. nov. The cones are associated with shoots bearing opposite and decussate scale-like leaves. These shoots are described as Cupressinocladus cracoviensis sp. nov. On the evidence of their association and some agreement in cuticle details, the cones and shoots are regarded as belonging to the same plant: Harrisiocarpus cracoviensis comb. nov. The plant is attributed to the family Podocarpaceae, particularly because the single seed is partly covered by the cone scale. In its elongate cones and seed structure the plant resembles Scarburgia, though the leaf and female cone scale arrangement more closely resemble the extant podocarp Microcachrys. The elongate cones of Scarburgia and Harrisiocarpus compared to those of extant podocarps suggest that the size of the female cone in the Podocarpaceae became reduced during evolution subsequent to the Jurassic." @default.
