- W2043997029 abstract "As our world becomes more and more concerned with the impact of human industrialized societies on the natural environment, many sociologists, anthropologists, politicians, and writers are simultaneously becoming more interested in the reverse. Analyzing the ways in which our societies are affected by their geography and landscape seems to offer some potential insight for understanding ourselves. Within this growing body of work, a new focus on food studies has emerged. In one of the foundational texts on food and identity, Consuming Passions, author and anthropologist Peter Farb indicates a similar understanding of the multifaceted value of food studies, stating that “eating inevitably brings humans into broader contact with their total environment—not only their natural surroundings, but also their social, economic, and political relations with neighbors” (10). By examining food's wide variety of cultural and symbolic roles in a given society, we can better understand the people who live there, the traditions and gender roles associated with that society, and the values they have associated with both their natural, spiritual, and familial environments." @default.
