- W2044008210 abstract "Abstract An atomic beam of cesium, with kinetic energy variable from 1 eV to 150 eV, intersects a thermal-energy beam of MCl 4 , where M = Sn, Ti, Ge and Si. Ionic products of these reactions are Cs + , MCl 4 − , MCl 3 − and Cl − . The kinetic energy thresholds for some of these product ions are measured for M = Sn and Ti. From these thresholds the electron affinities are deduced for MCl 4 and MCl 3 , as are some bond energies in the product negative ions. Alternatively, crossed beams of Cs 2 (or K 2 ) and MCl 4 are used with both beams having thermal energies. With M = Sn and Ge, Cs + (or K + ) and MCl 3 − are produced, and for these systems a lower limit for the electron affinity of MCl 3 is deduced. The molecular energetics reported here agree with values measured at Harvard University for M = Sn, but are in significant disagreement with the electron affinities of SnCl 3 and GeCl 3 obtained at Rice University." @default.
