- W2044154920 abstract "Glycosaminoglycan (GAG) contents were analyzed in articular cartilage of femoral heads from normal young dogs and from those with degenerative joint disease. Normal cartilage from different areas of femoral heads had similar concentrations of GAGs. Hexosamine, glucuronic acid, and sulfate concentrations were reduced markedly in degenerative cartilage when compared to normal samples. The water content of osteoarthritic cartilage was increased despite decreased GAG concentration. Cetyl pyridinium chloride fractionation of GAGs isolated from normal and osteoarthritic cartilage on cellulose columns revealed that chrondroitin sulfates decreased 60% and keratosulfate 42% in abnormal tissue. Although we failed to measure decreased chain length of chondroitin sulfate, evidence suggested that a glycosidase was involved in the degradation of GAGs in that soluble N-acetyl hexosamine was increased in abnormal cartilage. The results support the concept that a proteinase and a glycosidase may be of importance early in the overall pathogenesis of degenerative joint disease." @default.
