- W2044163640 abstract "Abstract In permeate, which is a byproduct from cheese production, the dry matter consists mainly of lactose (85%). Recently, a method to hydrolyse lactose in milk byproducts to glucose and galactose has been developed. Three feeding experiments and two digestibility experiments were carried out to evaluate the effect of hydrolysis on the nutritive value of permeate. Substitution of 20% of the net energy in the control diet with either hydrolysed or untreated liquid permeate did not affect performance. Furthermore, hydrolysed liquid permeate could be substituted up to 40% without affecting performance. On the contrary, substituting 40% of the net energy in the control diet with untreated permeate powder decreased performance whereas no effect was detected at 20% substitution. Digestibility experiments indicated that hydrolysis of permeate increased the digestibility of energy by 3%, but had no effect on the content of metabolizable energy (13.2 MJ/kg DM). This observation can be explained by galactose excretion in the urine. Urinary galactose excretion was correlated to the intake of hydrolysed lactose. In a digestibility experiment with ileal cannulated pigs the passage of lactose to the hindgut was found to be reduced by hydrolysis, which may decrease the adverse effects of lactose in the hindgut." @default.
