- W2044176092 abstract "Replicas of frozen-fractured, glycerinated, unfixed insect flight muscle in rigor were studied. Both etched and unetched fractures were examined. A clear differentiation of thick filament profiles either side of the M band in oblique fractures was seen. Transverse fractures of thick filaments revealed a differentiation between cortex and core. Etched longitudinal fractures demonstrate that thick filaments are readily split. Where thick and thin filaments lie side by side, they are linked by cross bridges at 36-nm spacings, and which lie at an angle to the filaments. Large areas of such fractures show overall linear arrays at 25°, 60°, and 90° resulting from bridge alignment. Optical transforms of these micrographs show strong off-meridional spots. Unetched longitudinal fractures of thin filaments reveal a right-handed double helix with a 33-nm repeat and rows of 10-nm diameter beads, the heads of myosin cross bridges in linear arrays with a 37-nm repeat." @default.
