- W2044243387 abstract "Abstract 1. 1. The basement lamella can first be detected in electron micrographs of sections of the head of embryos of Rana pipiens at stage 18. At this time it consists of isolated granules or short filaments embedded in ground substance. 2. 2. Collagenous filaments elongate and start aligning during stage 19. Orthogonal alignment is evidently initiated at stage 20 and by stage 21 is unquestionably established. At stage 22 there are six to eight aligned layers. Synthetic activity of epidermis increases markedly by stage 23, as indicated by the growth of intracellular microfibrils which appear to have an axial periodicity of about 250 A. The basement lamella thickens to twelve to sixteen layers by stage 24 and to about fourteen to eighteen layers at stage 25. 3. 3. In a 25-mm larva of Rana sylvatica the basement lamella of the tail has twenty layers, nearly all of them consisting of a single row of filaments. Occasional occurrence of multiple rows of filaments in a single layer may result from a normal variation of the mechanism which controls layering or may be an artifact either of displacement or obliquity of sectioning. 4. 4. The basement lamella in a 36-mm larva of Rana pipiens contains about thirty-two orthogonally aligned layers and an inner pool of nonlayered filaments adjacent to fibroblast cells." @default.
