- W2044489785 abstract "The three pituitary glycoprotein hormones, ICSH(LH), FSH, and TSH, are whown to have a similar general type of chemical nature, in that all three consist of chemically dissimilar subunits, designated α and β. Structure studies have elucidated the primary amino acid sequences of the subunits of two of the hormones, ICSH and TSH. These results show that ICSH-α and TSH-α are virtually identical in their structure. Thus, it can be concluded that the biological specificity of each hormone is a function of the β subunit. The β subunits of ICSH and TSH, however, show at least 50% homology. These results suggest that the subunits are ultimately derived from a common ancestral glycoprotein molecule. Both subunits are required for full biological activity in the commonly employed bioassays; however, the α subunit of one hormone may be combined with the β subunit of another hormone with the restoration of the biological activity of the β subunit-derived hormone." @default.
