- W2044610977 abstract "Spectroscopic observations of B stars have formed a fairlylarge part of the work of the 72-inch telescope for nearly fifty years. The researches of Plaskett and Pearce into the motions of these very hot and bright stars are well known: they supplied the first study of galactic rotation based upon a homogeneous sample of adequate size and they pointed the way to further advances. The writer has been closely associated, for some twenty-five years, with this part of the Observatory's work, and this account summarizes the main results obtained from the extensive observations. It is well known that the stars of class B are particularly useful in studies of galactic dimensions and motions. They are so bright that they may be observed spectroscopically at relatively great distances in spite of the dimming produced by the intervening dust. They allow us to detect and study the interstellar gas whose absorption lines are impressed on the relatively simple stellar spectra. They are, furthermore, the only intrinsically bright stars numerous enough to supply adequately large samples for the statistical studies that must be made in order to interpret the observed motions and distribution. The B-type stars are of interest in themselves because of their large masses and high luminosities. Spectroscopic binaries are very common among these stars and give us practically all the information we possess concerning stellar masses in excess of five times that of the sun. Their great luminosities indicate that the B stars are, generally, the most efficient generators of nuclear" @default.
