• W2044719782 abstract "Oxygen adsorption (“low pressure oxidation”) has been compared to oxidation at atmospheric pressures between room temperature (RT) and 700°C for Ni3Al that has been macroalloyed with chromium and microalloyed with zirconium and boron. The oxidation products have been investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). Low pressure oxidation was carried out in-situ in the analytical instruments at an oxygen pressure of 2.5 × 10−7 Torr (3.3 × 10−5 Pa). For temperatures below 300°C there is formation of both NiAl2O4 and Cr2O3, together with aluminum and zirconium oxides which appear to be in precursor oxide phases. Above 300°C, only Al2O3 and ZrO2 form, together with a sub-oxide designated (ZrO)1. There is a preference for the ZrO2 to be in particles distributed along grain boundaries. By contrast, atmospheric pressure oxidation yielded only NiO, Cr2O3 and some NiAl2O4. Angle-resolved photoemission has shown that this oxide is in a layered structure with a thin outer layer rich in Cr2O3 over a mixed NiO and NiAl2O4 layer. This nickel containing oxide layer also appears to be layered, with the layer structure changing with temperature.
