Prior to 1964 two species A . clazlda and A . ilentricosa, though adequately described in botanical literature, were missing from all known living collections of A v e m species, while only one sample of A. pilosa, and two of A . lo7zgiglz~lnis were available for cy to~o~ ida l studies. This made a study of specidtion amongst all the diploid species impossible. However, in 1964 all the Mediterranean specics were collected and extensively sanlplcd (Rajhathy, Zillinslt~ and Hayes, 1966). This original collection has made it possible to study the relationship of species hitherto uneuplored. This paper briefly describes the phenotypes and ltaryotypes of A . clazlda and A . velztricosa and reports data on cross-cbmpatibility, fertility and chromosome behaviour at meiosis in hybrids within the A,, and.^, and between the A, and A, ltaryotype groups. ~ & e d on the information obtained, the cytogenetic and pliylogenetic relationships within and between the diploid ltarvotvpe . groups are discussed." @default.
