- W2044779034 abstract "It might reasonably be asked, what is the function of sex in the elderly? The female human loses fertility progressively from the age of thirty, if not before, and is unlikely to conceive after fifty. Therefore her youngest child is likely to be independent when she is seventy. Although the elderly continue to consume the resources of the planet without being directly 'productive', they play an important supportive function, both in the rearing of their grandchildren, and in stabilizing the society in which that child will grow. Marital stability is still an important component of this supportive roll, and also can play a major part in the continued survival of the individuals comprising the couple. The arthritic wife may be the communicator for her deaf but agile husband, for example. The sexual drive as a means of reinforcing the pair bond is far from exhausted, but when separated from reproductive function is more susceptible to the winds of culture. Just as food preference is induced by culture so sexual behaviour will conform to the expectations of others. Nevertheless sexual activity in old age is recognized in many primitive cultures (Winn and Newton, 1982). The mistake is to assume that what characterizes sexual behaviour in the elderly of our generation will necessarily reflect the behaviour of the elderly in the next. This is relevant in the context of cross-sectional studies which can only tell us what is happening today; they cannot predict accurately what will be happening in twenty years." @default.
