- W2044842024 abstract "Key to understanding Macrorhabdus ornithogaster is knowing what it is. When it was first described, it was recognized correctly as being a yeast. It stained with silver stains and the periodic acid-Schiff stain (PAS), both of which stain fungi [1,2]. Because of its unusual long, slender shape, however, subsequent investigators could not demonstrate a nucleus or other typical eukaryotic organelles and concluded that it was a bacterium [3]. In 1990, Scanlan and Graham [4] published a paper that indicated that they had isolated the so-called ‘‘megabacterium’’ and that it was a facultative anaerobic and capnophilic bacterium that was sensitive to many antibiotics. The bacterium that they isolated, however, was smaller and more variable in size than the organisms in situ. Additionally, they did not characterize the organism by electron microscopy, they failed to show whether their isolate stained with PAS or silver stains, and they did not attempt to reproduce the disease by infecting budgerigars. Other investigators subsequently isolated similar bacteria from the proventriculus of the budgerigar and ostriches and assumed that these were the so-called ‘‘megabacteria’’ [5–7]. Additional work with these bacterial isolates led to the erroneous conclusion that the so-called ‘‘megabacteria’’ can infect mammals [8–11]. Realization that the so-called ‘‘megabacteria’’ were, in fact, a fungus came in several steps. Initially, not all investigators were able to grow a bacterium from the proventriculus of infected birds, even when large" @default.
