- W2044864244 abstract "Abstract A cohort of 444 presumably healthy white males was selected from a group of 1,363 persons seen at the Greenbrier Clinic for periodic health examinations. Selection was based on the completion of seven or more examinations at approximately annual intervals, with persons failing to complete seven examinations for various reasons excluded. Blood pressure measurements of the selected cohort were analyzed for the relationship of blood pressure to age, and the variability of blood pressure over time. While a cross-sectional view of the mean blood pressure by age at first examination indicated a tendency of the mean to increase with increasing age, no definite upward trend was observed for the mean pressures of the group from examination over the 6-year period, possibly because of the relatively short span of the period of observation. When individual trend values were examined, of 438 men with systolic trends not equal to zero, 238 or 54.3 per cent were positive and of 429 with diastolic trends not equal to zero, 47.8 per cent were positive. Neither percentage differed significantly statistically from a theoretical chance distribution of 50 per cent positive and 50 per cent negative. The pressure measurements of individuals showed great variability from examination to examination. The average (pooled) standard deviation of individuals for the seven examinations was 8.8 mm Hg for the systolic pressure and 5.6 mm Hg for the diastolic. Princeton diagnostic classifications of the group also showed considerable variation from examination to examination without pronounced trend. Of the 444 individuals, only 46 per cent were classified alike on all seven examinations, and only 44 per cent were normal on all seven examinations. As the number of examinations on which the diagnosis agreed became fewer, there was a shifting from a preponderance of normal diagnoses to abnormal. Additional studies of the blood pressure data in relation to laboratory and physical findings are planned, as well as a prospective study of the relationship of blood pressure to the development of cardiovascular-renal disease, and death." @default.
