- W2044909818 abstract "Objective: To examine self-reported fatigue following traumatic brain injury (TBI) in relation to the amount of time spent in homemaking, home maintenance, school, work, riding public transportation, and driving a private vehicle. Design: Prospective cross-sectional natural history. Setting: Individuals were interviewed in varied community settings. Participants: 140 individuals that were 1 to 20 years post of a moderate to severe TBI. Interventions: Not applicable. Main Outcome Measures: Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory, including subscales for General Fatigue, Physical Fatigue, Reduced Activity, Reduced Motivation, and Mental Fatigue. Results: There was no relationship between time spent in homemaking, driving or riding public transportation, and any of the fatigue subscales. There was a significant relationship between time spent in school and physical fatigue. Individuals spending more time in school activities were the ones who typically had less physical fatigue (P<.05). There was a significant relationship between time spent in home maintenance and mental fatigue. Individuals spending more time in home maintenance activities were the ones who typically had less mental fatigue (P<.05). The most compelling relationship was between hours spent working for money and fatigue. Individuals spending 35 or more hours per week working were the ones who typically had less physical fatigue (P<.05), fewer issues with fatigue-related reduced activity (P<.005), and fewer issues with fatigue-related reduced motivation (P<.005) in comparison to individuals who did not work at all. Relationships with injury severity and demographics will be presented. Conclusions: In some community life areas, the time spent in activities appears to be unrelated to self-reported fatigue. Time spent in paid-work activities is related to multiple aspects of fatigue, with individuals working full time reporting less fatigue than those not working. While difficult to infer causality based on the current study design, decreased fatigability may be due to increased activation. Future prospective longitudinal research should be considered." @default.
